Photobiomodulation

Light that your mitochondria actually listen to

We use the Oxycell ProLux red-light bed, specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light penetrate the skin and stimulate the mitochondria, your cellular power plants. The result is better circulation, faster recovery, healthier skin, and a quietly more resilient you.

A traditional sauna

Sauna Benefits

A traditional sauna is a small heated room or structure designed for dry or steam bathing, originating from Finland where it has been a cultural institution for thousands of years.

How it works

The room is heated by a wood-burning or electric stove (called a kiuas) that heats a pile of rocks to temperatures typically between 70–100°C (160–212°F). Water can be ladled onto the rocks to create bursts of steam (löyly), raising humidity and the perceived heat.

Key Features

  • Interior

Wooden interior (typically spruce, pine, or aspen) that absorbs heat without getting too hot to touch

  • Humidity

Low humidity (10–20%) unless water is thrown on the rocks

  • Session

Sessions usually last 20–30 minutes, followed by cooling off (cold shower, plunge pool, or rolling in snow)

Traditional Experience

In Finnish culture, the sauna is a place for relaxation, socializing, and even spiritual reflection, historically, births and important rituals took place there.

Health benefits commonly associated with regular sauna use include improved circulation, muscle relaxation, stress relief, and skin cleansing through sweating. It's distinct from a steam room (which uses wet heat and high humidity) or an infrared sauna (which uses light waves rather than heated air).

Hormesis in practice

What Is Hormesis?

Controlled amounts of stress creates an environment for resilience, triggering cellular repair mechanisms such as antioxidant defenses, autophagy, and DNA repair. You’re essentially training your cells to handle stress more efficiently over time.

Sauna & Hormesis

Hormesis is the biological principle that a mild, controlled stressor triggers adaptive responses that make the body stronger and more resilient, the idea that “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” at a cellular level.

Sauna is one of the cleanest examples of hormesis in practice.

What Happens in the Body During Sauna (the stress)

  • 01Core temperature rises 1–2°C, mimicking a fever-like state
  • 02Heart rate increases to 100–150 bpm
  • 03Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are activated
  • 04The cardiovascular system is stressed similarly to moderate exercise
  • 05Cortisol spikes briefly

The Hormetic Adaptations (the benefit)

  • CardiovascularRepeated heat stress strengthens vascular function, improves endothelial flexibility, and lowers resting blood pressure over time.
  • Cellular repairHeat shock proteins (especially HSP70, HSP90) are molecular chaperones, they repair misfolded proteins and protect against cellular damage. Regular activation builds a standing reserve of them.
  • MetabolicGrowth hormone can spike dramatically (2–5×) after sauna, supporting tissue repair and fat metabolism.
  • NeurologicalBDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) increases, supporting neuroplasticity and mood. Norepinephrine rises sharply, improving focus and attention.
  • Longevity signalingPathways like FOXO3 and autophagy (cellular "self-cleaning") are upregulated, the same pathways activated by fasting and cold exposure.

Red Light Therapy Bed

A non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to promote healing and rejuvenation. It works through photobiomodulation, where light energy is absorbed by cells, enhancing their function and promoting various health benefits.

7 Steps

How light therapy is dosed at YouZone

Photobiomodulation is dose-dependent: too little is wasted, too much is wasted differently. Here is how we put the right amount into your week.

Goal intake

Step 1

Goal intake

Recovery, skin, sleep, cardiovascular conditioning, we identify the specific outcome before designing the schedule.

Wavelength selection

Step 2

Wavelength selection

Red light (around 660 nm) for skin and surface tissue; near-infrared (around 850 nm) for deeper musculoskeletal and mitochondrial effects.

Sauna pairing

Step 3

Sauna pairing

Where appropriate, traditional sauna is paired with red light for combined cardiovascular conditioning, sweat detoxification, and recovery.

Weekly cadence

Step 4

Weekly cadence

Most patients run three sauna and red-light sessions per week. The Wellness Membership bundles three sessions per month at the entry tier.

Stack with recovery

Step 5

Stack with recovery

We coordinate light and sauna with hyperbaric, IV therapy and training, so the recovery week is engineered, not random.

Re-assess at 12 weeks

Step 6

Re-assess at 12 weeks

Skin, sleep, recovery markers and resting heart-rate-variability all give us measurable signal at the 12-week mark.

Long-term recovery rhythm

Step 7

Long-term recovery rhythm

Light and sauna become part of your weekly architecture, locked into a cadence, paired with your training week, and re-evaluated against your numbers every quarter.

Why it matters

A few minutes of the right light, several times a week

Photobiomodulation is one of the cleanest interventions in longevity medicine, no needles, no medication, no recovery time. Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light upregulate mitochondrial energy production, improve microcirculation, lower local inflammation, support collagen synthesis in the skin, and accelerate soft-tissue repair. Paired with traditional sauna, you also get the cardiovascular conditioning of a moderate workout, heart rate up, vascular tone trained, heat-shock proteins activated.

Red and near-infrared light therapy use specific wavelengths at low heat to drive cellular effects (mitochondria, collagen, microcirculation). Traditional sauna delivers heat at depth for cardiovascular conditioning and sweat detoxification. We use them together because they are complementary.

Red and near-infrared sessions are usually 10 to 20 minutes. Traditional sauna sessions run 30 to 45 minutes. We typically combine them so a full visit is around an hour.

Yes. Red and near-infrared at the doses we use have an excellent safety profile. We protect the eyes during direct exposure and screen for the small number of contraindications during intake.

Three sessions per week is the sweet spot for most goals. Skin and recovery effects become visible at the 6-to-12-week mark; cardiovascular signals (resting heart-rate, HRV) show up sooner.

It looks like a spa treatment, but in our clinic it is dosed and stacked like medicine, paired with hyperbaric, IV therapy and training, against a goal you can measure. That is the difference.
